General Surgery

General surgery is the medical specialty within the surgical discipline that covers operations of the digestive system, including the gastrointestinal tract and the hepato-bilio-pancreatic system and the endocrine system, including also the adrenal, thyroid, parathyroid, breast and other glands of the digestive system. It also includes hernia and eventration repair of the abdominal wall. In these areas of surgery, a specialist is not required, although the general surgeon may specialize in some of them. This is not the same in all countries since it is considered a different specialty depending on the location, with super specialization being understood as having a deeper knowledge in one of its surgical branches. Since the advent of laparoscopic surgery, the general surgeon has had to adapt in recent times to new types of surgical approaches, where in many cases the skills acquired in open surgery are contrasted and complement each other with the new surgical approach.

The majority of interventions in general surgery require similar instrumentation except in the case of rectal, mammary and thyroid procedures, which require special instrumentation with the use of professional surgical elements that are suitable for each type of intervention.
